Cache Canyon & Capay Valley

Cache Canyon River Trips is a family-owned and family-operated business.  We live and work in the beautiful Capay Valley, just a few miles south of the Cache Canyon.

Geology: The Capay Valley is one of Northern California’s magnificent natural treasures.  It is a visual reminder of the earth’s Natural history. Rocks and sediments that formed deep under the sea in the Mesozoic Era (248-65 Million years ago) have been manipulated by the earth’s plate tectonics and thrust to the surface to form the magnificent and diverse strata that valley visitors see today.

This very dynamic tectonic activity also formed the Rumsey hills. Rocks and sediments that lay 5000 feet under water 100 million years ago continue to be shoved on top of newer river sediment such as the Blue Cliffs (only 15 thousand years old). This dance between compressing and divergent plates continues to move the valley’s landscape at about 5 inches per year.

Flora & Fauna: In addition to the breathtaking views of the canyon you may also be treated to a visual encounter with one of the valley’s many animals.  Black tailed deer, Tule elk, river otters, turtles, egrets, herons and a variety of other shore birds all frequent the riverbanks. Red tailed hawks, osprey, falcons, golden and bald eagles soar high above the canyon walls. Keep a close eye out for the resident bald eagle that is regularly seen perched just north of The Mother Rapid.

Help us take care of the river

We are very environmentally conscious. Please use all of the trash and recycle receptacles. They are conveniently located at all of the put-in and pull-out sites as well as the camp site. Let us know if you need garbage bags, or if you see refuse left anywhere. We want to ensure that the creek ecosystem remains healthy for future generations.
